The Communist Party of India (Marxist) began a signature campaign to impress upon the State Government to allocate Rs. 100 crore for improving the facilities at the Government Rajaji hospital (GRH) here on Tuesday.

Cadres were collecting signature from residents at two places in each of the 72 wards of the old city and in crowded places like railway station, bus stands and the GRH, the party district secretary, B. Vikraman, said.

The party has decided to collect one lakh signature for its demand to create additional infrastructure including modern medical equipment at the GRH that has been serving the people of southern districts. “We have given our memorandum to the Chief Minister, Health Minister and Finance Minister and officials of the departments concerned with the detailed estimates for the development work. We have sought allocation for the same during the next budget,” the party MLA, R. Annadurai, said.

“The mortuary was in a bad shape causing lot of inconvenience to the people in the surroundings. It should be modernised. We want to make the facilities and quality of treatment provided at the GRH on par with private hospitals,” the MLA said.

Mr. Vikraman said that the party would organise a fast at Goripalayam on February 14 in which the party State secretary, G. Ramakrishnan, is likely to participate.
