CPI (M) district conference under way

December 21, 2014 12:02 pm | Updated 12:02 pm IST - MADURAI:

Amid heavy police bandobust, a three-day district-level conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) commenced at Usilampatti near here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Central Polit Buro member and MP T.K. Rangarajan said that some forces here had given an impression that the Communists indulged in creating disturbance to communal harmony.

Not to take any chance, the police had deployed a large posse of men and officers.

It was the Communist party, which had been always fighting for the common man’s welfare whereas political parties like the DMK, AIADMK, BJP or the Congress had a hidden agenda.

But for the Communists, no other party had expressed concern over burning issues like unemployment. In Tamil Nadu, with 90 lakh educated people, no tangible steps had been taken by the government to provide employment. On the contrary, industrial undertakings like Nokia closed down, leaving several thousands jobless.

In a bid to keep the Congress away from coming to power in Tamil Nadu, the Communists had supported either the DMK or AIADMK. However, things had changed now. There was a political vacuum in the State now and the BJP was trying to capitalise on it. It would never succeed as people of Tamil Nadu always believed in secularism , he asserted. The Communists would rise to the occasion and bring like-minded forces together, which would ultimately keep the BJP at bay.

Taking a dig at the BJP, he further said that the party had shown its true colours by burying all its poll promises.

The CPI (M) district secretary M. Dharmalingam presided. A rally from Malayandi Theatre to Murugan Koil Thidal with silambam and thappu attam marked the inaugural function. As many as six DSPs, 13 Inspectors, 45 SIs and 1,000 policemen from Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar and Theni districts have been deployed.
