The city corporation distributed hundials (piggy banks) to students of Kaakkai Paadiniyar Girls Higher Secondary School here on Friday to mark World Savings Day, which is celebrated on October 31.
Speaking at the event, Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa said that the savings boxes were distributed to students of the school two years back. The teachers must keep track of the thrift habit of the students and encourage them to save more. Drawing examples from ‘Tirukkural,’ Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan said that students must spend only within their capacity. “Do not limit the thrift concept to money alone. Ensure that water is also not wasted. Save money every day so that it helps you in the future for paying your school fees and even to financially support your families,” he said.
To encourage the habit of savings among students, the city corporation would distribute hundials to all the 70,833 students of 66 corporation schools, said Suganthi Ashok, Chairperson, School Education Committee for the corporation.
