Corporation has come to a standstill, says DMK

Condemning the Corporation of Madurai for its “maladministration,” the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) members urged the people to neglect the AIADMK in the ensuing general elections.

The DMK city unit staged a demonstration at Anna Nagar in which senior leaders led by Pon. Muthuramalingam, V. Velusamy, G. Thalapathi and former Mayor P. Kulandaivelu addressed. Over 2000 cadres, including women, participated in the agitation.

The speakers squarely blamed Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa and administrators. “An ineffective leadership has led to corrosion in the management. Waste disposal is far from satisfaction. Roads are very bad. Potable water, though the officials say so, it is not at all fit for consumption in many localities as gutter gets mixed as complaints have poured in from the residents,” the DMK members said.

Two conservancy workers died of asphyxiation at HMS Colony recently while cleaning an underground drainage of the Corporation. The officials responsible should be held accountable and the police should take stern action, the speakers demanded.

The tax-paying citizens expected the administration to repair the bad roads at least. Similarly, when diseases like dengue were threatening, the Corporation should focus on preventing it well before the situation would turn worse. Hopes to develop Madurai as Smart City might happen, only when the DMK came to power, they said.

There were also charges of rise in corruption in the “Anna Maaligai” – the seat of Corporation of Madurai as many contractors alleged that they had mounted arrears and only those who agreed to “terms,” payments were released, they said.
