DMK and AIADMK to be its target, says G.K.Vasan

Union Minister of Shipping G.K.Vasan campaign for Congress Party candidate T.N. Bharath Nachiappan in Madurai on Monday.

The Congress is the only party which is facing the electorate alone and this is an important election for the party, said Union Minister and senior leader G.K. Vasan here on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, he said “after having fulfilled all promises made in 2009, we are facing the people boldly. This is our strength.… If Tamil Nadu government claims that there is development in many spheres, the Centre’s role in allocation of funds cannot be neglected.” In the last two terms of the Congress-led UPA government, many initiatives had been introduced and implemented successfully, especially for the minorities and the needy, he said.

To a question on campaign after 10 p.m., he said it would encourage people to resort to illegal acts to woo voters. The Election Commission should monitor such activities closely. The people have not forgotten the abnormal hike in milk prices, electricity and bus fare imposed by the AIADMK government.

With regard to Madurai Lok Sabha constituency, Mr. Vasan said that the Congress had earmarked funds for development of the Madurai airport and Meenakshi Temple, and for improvement of civic amenities. However, the State government had ‘failed’ to use the funds effectively, he charged. Today, the Madurai airport is connected to a few international destinations directly. The Congress has played a pivotal role in this, he asserted.

Though the BJP is our prime opponent at the national-level, the DMK and AIADMK parties would be our target in the State. Ruling out that there is Modi wave, he said the people would certainly reward the Congress for all the good work done by the party.

Later, Mr. Vasan accompanied by Madurai Congress candidate Bharat Nachiappan, campaigned in as many as seven places. At Jaihindpuram, he lashed the AIADMK for opening TASMAC outlets. He did not spare the DMK; when in power, it had converted agricultural lands into house-site plots. Only during the Congress regime, there was overall development and the Congress alone can give a stable government, he said
