CM’s birthday celebrations: sweets distributed, special meeting convened

The 66th birthday of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was celebrated with all-religious prayers and distribution of sweets.

Songs from films that featured party founder M.G. Ramachandran and Ms.Jayalalithaa, were belted out through public address systems in many places in the city. Special prayers were organised in many temples, churches and mosques.

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa cut a huge cake and distributed it among the public.

A special council meeting of the Madurai Corporation was convened on Monday in connection with Ms.Jayalalithaa’s birthday, during which sweets were distributed.

At the meeting, it was decided to give umbrellas to the Corporation schoolchildren to beat the summer heat. Similarly, the members resolved to provide free training to aspirants appearing for competitive service examinations. The successful candidates would be presented with awards. The best employee award to outstanding Corporation staff too would become an annual event in future.

In the rural district, sweets were distributed to hundreds of people at Melur. Grand feasts were organised at different places. Milk and fruits were given to patients at Melur Government Hospital. Ministers Sellur K. Raju, R.B. Udayakumar and S. Sundarajan were among those who participated in the prize distribution function of a kabbadi tournament organised at Tamukkam ground.

Babies born on Monday at government hospitals would be gifted with gold rings on Tuesday, AIADMK functionaries said.
