City grieves for gang rape victim

A day after the death of Delhi rape victim, a series of peaceful protests were organised in Madurai demanding swift trial and stringent action against the six accused.

Nearly 75 women, who protested in front of Madurai Adheenam’s mutt on Sunday, condemning Adheenam Arunagirinathar’s remarks on women were arrested.

They were later released in the evening.

The Adheenam had recently remarked that women should wear decent clothes to protect themselves from sexual harassment.

Condemning his remarks, the women who protested in front of the mutt said he should have condemned the brutal act of gang rape in Delhi rather than making the statement against women.

They also demanded an apology from him. However, the Adheenam declined to apologise and stated that he had only said that women should dress decently and also added that he did not approve the brutal act which led to the death of the student.

Demonstrations staged

Members of the Students Federation of India staged a demonstration near Periyar Bus Stand on Sunday condemning the brutal assault of the 23-year-old student.

The members sought for swift justice, setting up fast track courts for rape cases and demanded compensation to the victim’s family.

‘Zeal 2 Heal’, a non profit organisation run by a team of youth in Madurai took a silent rally from Tamukkam ground to the Collectorate demanding immediate trial in the case. They also protested against sexual harassment against women in India.
