As many as 115 complaints of cheating received

A Bahujan Samaj Party former MLA from Rajasthan, Banwari Lal Kushwaha, was taken into custody by Economic Offences Wing (EOW) sleuths for interrogation in connection with a financial company fraud case.

EOW sources said the former MLA, who had represented Dholpur Assembly Constituency, was produced before a court in Madurai by Rajasthan police in this connection, and subsequently taken into police custody for interrogation by the EOW.

The EOW had registered cheating cases against Garima Agrotech that lured gullible investors to make fixed deposits and recurring deposits on the promise of exorbitant returns. The company had its offices in Madurai, Virudhunagar, Karungalakudi (Madurai district), Theni and Kumbakonam. The EOW had registered a case of cheating in 2016. Sources said that as many as 115 complaints of cheating from various places to the tune of ₹1.15 crore had been received. The cases have been combined with the EOW Virudhunagar unit.

Initially, the case was registered against the finance company and seven accused, including Kushwaha. He was formally arrested in August 2016 when he was an MLA. However, he was disqualified from the post of MLA following conviction in another case. EOW Inspector Prabhakar will interrogate him for three days.
