CBI seeks custody of 19 accused

MADURAI

The CBI moved the CBI Court in Madurai on Thursday seeking custody of the 19 accused, including six customs officials, arrested in connection with Tiruchi airport smuggling case.

Additional District Judge S. Ganesan adjourned the case till August 11. The court also adjourned the bail plea of the 19 accused. The investigating agency booked them under Section 120 B (Criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The accused are lodged at Madurai Central Prison.

Following a surprise check by the CBI officials at the airport the nexus between suspected smugglers and a few customs officials came to the fore. The officials allegedly let off the passengers without checking their baggage.
