Protest meet organised in the city

Instead of a retired Judge conducting an enquiry into the Paramakudi police firing, a sitting Judge of the High Court should be appointed in order to bring out the facts behind the incident, said Solai Palanivelrajan, treasurer, Mallar Kazhagam.

Addressing a protest meeting held near District Collectorate on Wednesday, he urged the government to lift Section 144 of CrPc imposed in Paramakudi as normalcy had returned in the town.

He also demanded that the State should drop all the cases “foisted” against hundreds of Dalits in Paramakudi in connection with the violence.

The Dalit forum insisted that a CBI probe should be ordered and should do a thorough investigation from the unlawful detention of Dalit leader John Pandian which resulted in his supporters staging a protest and the subsequent police firing, he said.

Mr.Palanivelrajan demanded that the government should enhance the compensation from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased victims in the firing. Police officials involved in the firing and other officials who were responsible for the firing should be dismissed.

He added that the protests will continue in the State until the demands made by them were met by the government.
