After doctors at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre here declared a patient ‘brain dead,’ his family members agreed for the harvest of some of his vital organs which helped at least five patients get a new lease of life on Tuesday.
A 23-year-old college student, Selvakumar of T. Kokkulam in Tirumangalam taluk, who was riding a two-wheeler to Vadipatti to see a friend on the night of March 24, met with an accident near Thanichiyam. After first aid in a local hospital, he was shifted to Meenakshi Hospital in the small hours, where doctors declared him brain dead.

After counselling the family members, hospital authorities conveyed the details to the State government seeking permission. In about five hours, the vital organs of the brain dead patient were harvested successfully.
According to a press release, the kidney and liver were donated to patients undergoing treatment at the MMHRC. Another kidney was donated to a patient at Government Rajaji Hospital.
The heart was airlifted to Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. The police had arranged a green corridor for easy movement of the harvested organ from the hospital to Madurai airport.

The team of doctors commended the family members of Selvakumar for their gesture of instantly agreeing to donate his organs.
At this crucial hour, when the family had lost their dear ones, it was all the more touching to see them agree to donate his organs. By doing so, the family had given life to five persons, the doctors said.
