State political parties that have aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha elections owe an explanation to the people on the contentious issues of Common Civil Code and construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya which have been mentioned in BJP’s poll manifesto, veteran Left leader R. Nallakannu has said.
Addressing an election meeting seeking votes for the Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate for the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency, B. Vikraman, here on Thursday, Mr. Nallakannu said the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and the Pattali Makkal Katchi should spell out their stands on these issues.
The BJP manifesto also spoke against the implementation of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel project. “The BJP is attempting to make the country a field for communal clashes again. These political parties should make their stands on these issues clear,” Mr. Nallakannu said.

He charged that the Congress rule at the Centre was full of scams and corruption. “The total amount of non-performing assets and black money was to the tune of Rs.40 lakh crore. Still, the Congress was bent upon making crorepatis like Mukesh Ambani richer by increasing fuel prices every month. The party is concerned only about corporates and not the common man,” he said.
Only the Left parties were bothered about the masses. The manifesto of the Left parties spoke against disinvestment in public sector and foreign direct investment in retail sector. The parties were also pressing for ways to solve the Sri Lankan issue and for interlinking rivers across the country.
The MLAs and MPs of the Left parties did not make huge money, but they continued to live in poverty. “We have been fighting for the people and we will continue to fight for them. We have fielded our cadres in the election for getting you more rights,” he noted.
