A single judge at the Madras High Court bench here reprimanded a police officer on Thursday for arresting a petitioner, defying court direction not to arrest him.
Parvathi Devi, the inspector of Rajakkalmangalam police station in Kanyakumari district, was admonished after she arrested D. Narayanan who had an interim order in his favour from the court. The case was closed after she tendered an apology to Justice K.B.K. Vasuki.
Mr Narayanan reportedly borrowed a five sovereign gold jewel from his neighbour and returned a silver jewel. An FIR was registered against him based on the complaint of his neighbour. Apprehending arrest, he moved the court and Justice Vasuki in an interim order delivered orally directed the police to refrain from arresting the petitioner till March 7. But the police arrested the petitioner on February 20. When the issue was brought to the notice of the judge, she directed the Superintendent of Kanyakumari district and the inspector of Rajakkalmangalam to be present at the court on Thursday.

The inspector was reprimanded by the judge for non-compliance of the court order. “This sort of attitude cannot be tolerated. Learn to do your duty”, the judge told the cop.
The inspector then apologised to the judge stating that the court’s order reached the police station but was not communicated to her because she was away on bandobust duty.
She further stated that the petitioner had obtained bail from a lower court. The judge closed the case after recording the statements of the inspector.
