An auto-driver, V. Muniyasamy, 24, was murdered by an armed gang at Old Kuyavarpalayam Road on Friday evening.
The driver, who was standing near his office, was chased by the armed gang that came in two-wheelers, waylaid him and hacked him to death.
The police said that an armed gang had made an attempt on the life of the deceased in 2012.

With the case under trial, some people had approached him a couple of days back pressing him to withdraw the case. However, he had refused to do so. The police suspect whether the same gang was involved in the murder.
Meanwhile, a six-member gang that went on an attacking spree created terror among the residents of Gomathipuram on Friday evening.
Local residents said that the gang that made triples ride on two motorbikes randomly attacked people and vehicles coming their way.

“Four of them carried long swords and firs attacked a tea stall and ransacked the glass furniture. They later attacked a man in an electric shop on 6{+t}{+h}Main Road.
The windscreen of an autorickshaw, a car and a water tanker were smashed with the swords,” an office-bearer of Gomathipuram Thendral Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, said. The police tried to identify the gang members with the CCTV installed in a bank. A few two-wheelers were also attacked.
However, before the police came to the spot, the perpetrators fled from the scene.
“Even as the police were enquiring about the attack spree, information about the murder in Old Kuyavarpalayam reached the police,” he said.
A city police officer said that it was sure whether the gang that created panic in Gomathipuram was involved in the murder under Teppakulam police limits.
