For the 112 children from 15 city schools, it was an opportunity well utilised. The exhibits on show at the ‘Veettukku Oru Vignani,’ a science expo organised by ‘Puthiya Thalaimurai,’ at Ananth Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School here on Tuesday reflected the concern of children over the deteriorating power situation and the need to exploit green energy.

The students were asked to come up with their ‘invention’ under five categories — agricultural appliances, industrial products, household appliances, energy applications and biological applications. The idea behind the effort was to provide a platform for children from rural areas to compete with their urban counterparts in providing solution to society’s problems.

The children used every available renewable source to demonstrate that conventional sources, which are depleting, need not be depended upon. Energy production from waste vegetables, urine and mud demonstrated their concern for the environment.
