Large number of cadre and functionaries of the AIADMK observed a day-long fast and staged demonstrations in various parts of the district, to condemn the conviction order against their party leader Jayalalithaa, on Monday.

Participating in the agitation near North Masi-West Masi junction, Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa, MP R. Gopalakrishnan, MLAs, councillors and other functionaries condemned their political opponents, including DMK leaders, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and others.

Unable to stomach the popularity Ms. Jayalalithaa had among the people, the opponents had foisted a false case against her and jailed her. “The opposition should understand that our leader (Amma) would not be cowed down by such threats…she will emerge as victorious from such crisis,” they said.

The speakers listed out the various welfare measures offered to the masses by the AIADMK government since 2011, and said that by her detention in the prison, the party had only earned sympathy from the public. They reiterated that Ms. Jayalalithaa would come clean of the corruption charges and once again face the people with confidence in the 2016 general elections.

There were demonstrations in suburban Melur, Usilampatti, Perayur, Sholavandan and Vadipatti by AIADMK functionaries.
