A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into two explosions reported at Nelpettai near here on November 20, 2013 and March 14 this year.
A. Syed Abdul Kathar, an advocate practising in the High Court Bench and also the district president of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) had filed the petition.
He accused the police of targeting Muslims in connection with the bomb blasts.

When the matter came up for hearing before Justice R. Subbiah on Monday, he directed a government counsel to obtain instructions from the police by March 24. He also orally ordered that the petitioner and other Muslim lawyers need not be harassed.
Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel W. Peter Ramesh Kumar contended that a series of cases under the Explosive Substances Act had been booked by the Madurai city as well as district police since 2011 and a majority of them remain under investigation till date.
He recalled that the K. Pudur police in the city limits had registered a case on April 30, 2011 on the basis of an explosive device found by a liquor shop supervisor. The same police registered another case on September 30, 2011 following the recovery of a similar device under a government bus.

On May 1, 2012, the Anna Nagar police registered in connection with an explosion next to a bicycle near a marriage hall and on November 1, 2012, the Tirupparankundram police booked a case with regard to explosive substances.
A special team formed to nab the culprits had targeted the Muslims and subjected them to physical torture in the guise of enquiry, he alleged.
He also said that the writ petitioner had been a counsel for some of the individuals who were called for enquiry.
However, surprisingly, the police on Saturday issued summons to the writ petitioner, his brother A. Mohamed Yusuff and two other advocates – Mohamed Abbas and Najmudeen – in connection with the Nelpettai explosions and hence the present writ petition.
