‘Enga Madura,’ a compact disc of a song celebrating the ancient city, was released by Karumuttu T. Kannan, Managing Director, Thiagarajar Mills, at a function organised at Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology here on Wednesday.
‘Enga Madura’ attempts to rediscover the city’s splendour – its varied heritage, ancient towers, vibrant people and its quaint self-contradictions – through music. The “musical rediscovery of Madurai” will come out as a series and the first five-minute single, in the form of a music video, captures the colours and sights of the city.
In his address, Mr. Kannan highlighted the need for every citizen of Madurai to contribute to its wellness.

He appealed to the people to come out with a public initiative, like ‘Siruthuli’ in Coimbatore, to clean up the Vaigai. People should get involved in such initiatives without looking for government support.
Changes should come to Madurai and they should be people-led, he said. He underscored the responsibility of residents in keeping city clean.
K.R. Raja Govindasamy, Director, Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, said that initiatives like ‘Madura’ would add meaning to the public discourse on Smart City. Aravind Srinivasan of Aravind Eye Care System explained how the two-year project took shape.

R. Prabhakar of the Department of Tamil, The American College, producer of the video, with Sanil Joseph, a health management consultant of Aravind Eye Care System, as the lead singer, was hopeful that the project would kindle a desire among people to revisit the ancient city’s history.
Lalji Vora, Managing Director, Milan Textile Enterprise, offered felicitations.
Proceeds from the sale of CDs will be utilised to make similar productions and also offered to institutions that work towards preserving and promoting the heritage of Madurai.
