“Up to 1 a.m. we kept the bookstore open and customers trickled in from the evening itself. Though the sudden rain did affect the turnout, we are happy with the sales. Our aim is to promote reading habit and the best way to begin it is on a New Year day,” says A. Krishnamoorthy, Zonal Manager, New Century Book House.

The discounts varied from 10 per cent to 90 per cent. People chose from various topics such as Kamba Ramayanam, Sangam literature, Russian literature, books of famous authors in Tamil.

“We close our shop at 8.30 p.m. on normal days. But we keep it open even after midnight only on December 31 and April 23, Shakespeare’s birth anniversary,” says Mr Krishnamoorthy.

The shop has a good collection of books from Sahitya Akademi and National Book Trust.
