Village panchayat president dies in mishap

Two persons including a village panchayat president died in a road accident at Alangulam in the district on Wednesday.

Police said K. Thangiah Pandian (63), panchayat president of Casa Majorpuram near Courtallam, and his housemaid S. Shanmugathaai (48) were returning home after visiting Thangiah Pandian's ailing wife Rajakumari in a hospital here on Wednesday. When they reached Vengalapottal intersection near Alangulam, the car dashed against a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus, proceeding from Puliyangudi to Tirunelveli.

While Thangiah Pandian, who sustained serious injuries, died on the spot, Shanmugathaai died in the hospital.

Alangulam police have registered a case.
