Three Corporation staff members attached to the Kochadai pumping station were placed under suspension here on Tuesday.
Following a complaint from the Assistant Engineer concerned, Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal directed officials to conduct an inquiry.
The complaint was that some unused steel pipes worth around Rs.4 lakh in the pumping station premises were missing. The needle of suspicion pointed to some of the staff members in the building.

A discreet probe suggested that three staff members, whose names were given as Krishnamurthi, Annadkodi and Saravanapandi, were behind the theft.
After an internal inquiry, the Corporation authorities lodged a complaint with the S.S. Colony police for further action.

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa and other officials made a surprise inspection at the integrated bus stand in Maatuthavani. After checking the attendance of conservancy workers, the team had a look at the removal of waste and garbage from the temporary bins.
Similarly, a visit to the Corporation-run medical assistance centre (OP clinic), which was started on March 30 for the benefit of passengers, drivers, conductors and general public, showed that close to 500 persons had made use of the clinic. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the clinic functioned with a nurse and a male para-medical staff.
On an average 30 to 50 persons made use of the centre. Basic drugs are given to needy people free of cost and screening for BP and first-aid are done at the centre. The Mayor and Commissioner checked the register and enquired with the staff members about the needs.

Under the ambitious Azhagiya Madurai Maanagar (AMMA) scheme, Mr. Chellappa went to wards situated within B.B. Kulam, Simakkal, Tallakulam and Pankajam Colony, where works such as removal of roadside sand, cleaning debris, checking non-functional bulbs in streetlights and underground drainage systems are under way.
