Drainage channel lining work in the city that was resumed recently has been stopped after two Madurai Corporation zonal Chairpersons allegedly threatened contractors. A formal complaint was made against the zonal Chairpersons, K. Jeyavel (Zone 2), and M. Rajapandian (Zone 3) to the Commissioner of Municipal Administration, Chandrakanth B. Kamble, when he inspected the works on Wednesday. During his inspection along with the Corporation Commissioner, R. Nanthagopal, representatives of contractors complained that Mr. Rajapandian’s supporters had manhandled their men while carrying out works a couple of days back.

“Works are carried out in my zone without my knowledge. Suddenly, somebody put up a huge shed in the Corporation land at Gatelock Road in my zone. When I asked the officials, they said that they were not aware of it. Hence, I asked those people to stop work,” Mr. Rajapandian said. He said he was being targeted for raking up the failures of the administration. He said that he had given his clarification to the Commissioner. The representative said Mr. Jeyavel prevented workers from carrying out works in DRO colony. Mr. Nanthagopal said that Mr. Kamble had sought an enquiry into the allegation.
