Summer camp goes rural for a change

Summer camps need not always confined to the urban areas. The rural and suburban children are also taking part in such camps. Thiyagam Narpanbu Kalvi Maiyam's refresher camp with the motto of “Imparting life skills and values for children” aims to take the learning experience of the children beyond textbooks, said Amutha Shanthy who runs the Thiyagam Women Trust.

The sixth refresher camp of the Maiyam held at Vivekananda College near Thiruvedagam on Saturday and Sunday gave an opportunity to the children learn traditional arts and handicraft skills. The children had a great opportunity to learn clay doll making, Bommallattam, Oyilattam, Street Theatre, Mimicry, Paraiattam and many handicrafts.

The camp not only provided a space for the children but also brought out their latent talents. As many as 316 children, 23 differently-abled women along with trainers and volunteers from Melakkal, Thiruvedagam, Pykara, Keezhamathur, Kamatchipuram, Oothukuzhi, Malaipatti, Melakkal Kodimangalam, K. Pudur, Thottappanaickanur and Madurai participated in the camp.

V.K. Sanjeevi, General Manager, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Madurai, participated in the valedictory function and gave away certificates to the participants.
