Students should impress upon their parents to drive vehicles carefully on road, to wear helmets and to not answer mobile calls as it may distract them, said Superintendent of Police M. Manohar.
Addressing a large gathering of students including NCC cadets at Thiruparankundram on Tuesday as part of the “road safety week,” organised in association with the 108 emergency ambulance service, Mr. Manohar said that students' could emotionally reach the message to parents about the need for their safety.
The safety aspects should come voluntarily from every road-user. Quoting a slogan “It is a mission and not an intermission” on road safety, Mr. Manohar said that the youth should take this message to the masses.

The police booked cases on charges such as rash driving, drunken driving among others, but safe driving can be assured only by road-users.
Expressing concern over the rise in fatal road accidents in the district year-on-year since 2008, the SP appealed to the students to play a crucial role.
Thiruparankundram DSP Ponram, 108 emergency ambulance service officials including its regional manager Lakshmanan, Manager Thanikaivel Murugan among others participated.

Later, Mr. Manohar flagged off a cycle rally on the occasion.
Eye test
Transport Department, in association with the Aravind Eye Hospital conducted a free eye screening camp at the RTO (North) office. Deputy Transport Commissioner P. Kumarasami inaugurated the camp in the presence of RTOs T.G. Thomas, N. Ravichandran and Natarajan. A team of doctors screened 255 patients who had visited the RTO office seeking learners' driving licence and drivers who had come for fitness certificates for their heavy vehicles.
The doctors' recommended surgery for five persons and glasses for 25 persons.
