Madurai Mayor G. Thenmozhi on Monday inaugurated a modern slaughter house established at a cost of Rs. 3.84 crore in Anupanadi.
This is for the first time that a mechanised unit to hygienically slaughter sheep and goat has been set up by the Corporation. Commissioner S. Sebastine, Chief Engineer K. Sakthivel, East Zone Chairman V.K. Gurusamy, and Chairperson of Standing Committee on Health Raliya Banu were present.
The unit, imported from China, could slaughter 20,000 animals a month, Mr. Sakthivel said.

Its salient feature is that the animals are given a shock and made unconscious for 30 seconds by which time they are killed in the halal system. The animals would be hooked to an overhead rail conveyor. The animal would be beheaded, skinned and each organ cut separately by different persons.
“The process could be easily done as each worker does a specific job. The cleaned and uncleaned organs would be automatically separated,” Mr. Sakthivel said.
A veterinary doctor would be available at the slaughter house to check whether the meat is edible or not.

The solid waste would be removed through dumper bins to Corporation compost yard while the liquid waste would be treated and pumped out. The slaughter house has been set up on 1.95 acres.
