Karisalkulam village holds event despite ban

January 14, 2017 09:47 am | Updated 09:47 am IST - MADURAI:

Defying the Supreme Court-imposed ban, jallikattu was conducted, albeit on a smaller scale, in a vast barren piece of land in Karisalkulam village near here on Friday.

The organisers managed to bring nearly 10 bulls to the village overnight. A make-shift vaadi vasal — the narrow entry point through which the bulls are let out in to the arena — was erected.

At least three bulls were let out into the arena with more than 10 men attempting to tame them.

The sport was also conducted in what the locals referred to as ‘

vadam jallikattu ’ format, in which a raging bull was tied with a lengthy rope at the centre of the arena and a few youngsters attempted to tame them face-to-face.

Thevillagers managed to conduct the event for nearly an hour, by which time the authorities reached the spot.
