Six persons have been chosen from southern Tamil Nadu to undergo training in honey bee rearing at the prestigious Central Bee Research and Training Institute (CBRTI), Pune.
The training is being sponsored by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s (KVIC) Madurai Division, which covers ten southern districts.
“The members can learn about the latest advancements in apiculture (bee-keeping) from this institute, which is one of a kind in Asia,” Divisional Director of Madurai Region, M.T. Wakode, told The Hindu on Sunday.

The institute boasts of a library that houses over 3,000 books exclusively on bee-keeping, added Mr. Wakode who was a former Deputy Director of the institute. The team would also be visiting Mahabaleshwar, which is a hill station located in the Western Ghats range of Maharashtra and is famous for honey collecting.
The team will also be imparted training in breeding and multiplication, selling colony and other related things at State Bee-keeping Extension Centre. The members chosen were found to be among the most progressive bee-keepers in the ten southern districts and they could replicate the techniques they learn.
Their five-day trip would reach the institute on November 30, he said, and added that the team would learn advanced techniques of collecting royal jelly, wax and cross pollination.

The team would be led by a KVIC staff member– K. Kannan, Supervisor (bee-keeping) The members chosen are C. Jayakumar and A. Arivumani from Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district, A. Muthu who is working in the State-run Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited, Karur, Josphin from Madurai, M. Jeyalakshmi from Sivaganga and M. Mohan from Kuzhithurai in Kanyakumari district, said Mr. Wakode.
