HC tells SP to file report on complaint of sexual abuse

The Madras High Court Bench here on Tuesday directed Sivaganga Superintendent of Police to file a report by Thursday explaining steps taken by him pursuant to a complaint lodged by a person accusing a few police personnel of stripping his sister off her clothes in custody, abusing her sexually and shooting a video footage.

Habeas corpus petition

Passing interim orders on a habeas corpus petition, Justices K.K. Sasidharan and B. Gokuldas also directed the Dean of Government Rajaji Hospital here to submit a report on the treatment provided to the 28-year-old victim who had been admitted as an inpatient after she was reportedly beaten up with a stick and abused sexually by the policemen.

The victim’s elder brother had actually filed the petition accusing the Paramakudi police in Ramanathapuram district of having picked his younger brother from their house in Sivaganga district on June 15.

However, when the case came up for hearing on Tuesday, the petitioner’s counsel told the judges about the sexual abuse of his client’s sister between June 17 and 19.

Mother's complaint

Advocate A. Palkalaiselvan said that the petitioner’s 65-year-old mother had also lodged identical complaints with the Collectors and Superintendents of Police of both Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts on Monday (June 20) with respect to the sexual abuse.

The elderly woman had claimed that both she and her daughter were picked from their house on June 17.

Subsequently, they were lodged on the first floor of a building where the policemen allegedly snatched gold chains worn by them and subjected the young woman to sexual abuse, the counsel said.
