Foundation laid for church and mosque in Velammal Medical College

Foundation stone being laid for a church and mosque at the Velammal Medical College in Madurai.

In a unique function organised at the Velammal Medical College (VMC) here, foundation stone was laid for a church and mosque on Thursday.

A post office and mobile clinic were also inaugurated on the occasion.

With the objective of providing places of worship for patients and their relatives of different religions visiting the hospital, the church and mosque are to be constructed on the VMC campus, which already has a temple. P Edwin Yesuraj, Deputy Chairman, CSI Diocese of Madurai-Ramnad, while speaking after laying the foundation stone for the church, stressed the need for religious harmony and peaceful living. Moulana M. Abdul Jaffar Manbae, secretary, Madurai district Jamathull Ulamasabai, who laid the foundation stone for the mosque, outlined the purpose of religions and their role in making people gain wisdom to lead a happy life. He congratulated the VMC for setting up an example by having places of worship for all religions in its campus.

M. V. Muthuramalingam, chairman, declared open a post office and inaugurated a mobile clinic in a well equipped bus.

He outlined the future plans of VMC, which included recruiting more doctors and nurses to provide better care for patients. Raja Muthaiah, Dean, proposed a vote of thanks.
