Expressing the need to enhance the revenue and tax base, State Commercial Taxes Minister B.V. Ramana on Friday urged the senior officials of the department to be vigilant and strive hard to achieve the targets for the ensuing fiscal end.
At a review meeting held here at the Collector’s office, officials from Madurai, Sivaganga and Dindigul districts participated. Commercial Taxes Secretary to Government K. Manivasan, Madurai Collector Anshul Mishra, MLAs and others were present. The Minister said that as on November 2011, the state’s revenue earning from Commercial Taxes department stood at Rs 25,051.67 crore, while it stood at Rs 30,676.09 crore now (Nov 2012) posting a rise of 22.45 per cent. As for Madurai region was concerned, he said it was Rs 470.59 crore in November 2011, while it was Rs 568.51 crore (Nov 2012) posting 21.81 per cent rise.
The officials have to be more vigilant at the commercial tax check-posts and look for any evasion in consignments. Swift seizure of goods which had not been taxed would discourage the law offenders and also facilitate in roping in more revenue in the form of tax to the government, he noted.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had introduced very many tax friendly proposals and also earmarked funds for providing infrastructural facilities. “Hence, it was our bounden duty to show results,” he underlined.
Allocation of Rs 33.36 crore for revamping commercial tax check-posts in the State is being carried out in a phased manner, he informed in the meeting and pointed that Rs 85.15 lakh had been allotted for two check-posts in Madurai Region – Lower Camp and Bodimettu respectively for improving the facilities.
