A wave against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is catching up fast across the State, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko has said.
Addressing a public meeting at Paravai near here on Monday night, he charged the State government of failing miserably in protecting the common man's interests. Apart from rise in prices of essential commodities, law and order situation had slipped from bad to worse. When such was the case, the Chief Minister, who holds the Home portfolio, claimed that peace prevailed in the State.
He urged the people not to get carried away by gimmicks adopted by the DMK men to get votes. “The 2011-general election is a good opportunity for the people to teach a lesson to the DMK,” he said. The DMK government should owe responsibility for the overall degradation in many spheres in Tamil Nadu. Be it farmers or small and tiny industries, students or homemakers, they all faced difficulties everyday since prices of commodities, power cut, crime against women, thefts, burglaries and chain-snatching cases had increased manifold.

At a time when farmers faced power shutdown for several hours a day, the Chief Minister's announcement that the government wished to provide new pump sets or replace the old ones to farmers was nothing but a joke.
Mr. Vaiko took a dig at the Chief Minister for letting down the State's interest on Periyar dam issue. While the Kerala government went ahead with its plans, the Tamil Nadu government's stoic silence led to suspicion about the reason behind the delay in resolving this important issue. This was bound to affect farmers in the Cumbum valley and southern districts. “Even potable water may become scarce in near future.”
On behalf of the MDMK party, Mr. Vaiko presented Rs. one lakh to family members of Dravida Selvam, a party functionary who died in a road accident near here recently.
