Union Minister and DMK South Zone Organising Secretary M.K. Alagiri on Sunday visited several villages in the district and heard grievances besides distributing benefits under welfare schemes.

Mr. Alagiri, son of Chief Minister and DMK President M. Karunanidhi, began the day’s programme by declaring open 480 newly constructed flats for the sanitary staff of the city Corporation at Melavasal here.

The flats had come up after dilapidated dwelling units at the site, built 35 years ago, were demolished, after the residents represented the risky living conditions to Mr. Alagiri.

Mr. Alagiri, Union Chemical and Fertilizers Minister, later visited Keezhamathur where he handed over various benefits to 466 people.

He also visited Madakulam, Achampatthu, Melamathur Kodimangalam and Sambakudi and listened to the grievances of the people.

Stating that he was fulfilling his electoral promises, Mr. Alagiri, who made his successful electoral debut from Madurai Lok Sabha constituency in 2009, said “I get immense satisfaction when the people come to me with grievances and I am able to help them, and disburse welfare schemes.” He said petitions received during special grievance days were being attended to at the shortest possible time.
