41 persons booked for gambling in a club

The city police booked 41 persons for gambling in a club near the Madurai Railway junction and recovered Rs. 4.15 lakh on Wednesday evening.

Among the persons booked for having played cards for money was a former Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kalaimohan, the police said.

Acting on specific information, a police team, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Town), J. Doraisamy, raided the Madurai United Club, on the West Veli Street. The police seized the cash from Thalamuthu, cashier at the club, who had issued tokens for gambling.

“We got an alert about gambling two days back. We sent a decoy and found that the complaint was true,” the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), R. Thirunavukkarasu, said.

The police said that liquor was also served to the customers at the club without valid licence. The police seized a few IMFL bottles from the premises.

Thilagar Tidal police said that cases would be booked under Tamil Nadu Gambling Act and Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act.

The Deputy Commissioner said that more persons involved in organising the gambling would be held after an enquiry.
