1,190 kg sea cucumber seized

The marine police of the Coastal Security Group seized a huge haul of 1,190 kg of processed sea cucumber, the endangered species protected under schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Ac,t after intercepting a boat in the sea between Vedhalai and Maraikayarpattinam near Mandapam and detaining two persons, who attempted to smuggle the contraband to Sri Lanka.

Acting on specific information received from headquarters in Chennai, three Marine police teams, in a late night operation on Friday, seized the contraband, packed in 26 polythene layered gunny bags.

While two teams, led by lanchezhiyan, Deputy Superintendent of Police (in-charge), and Subash Chandra Bose, Inspector of Police, patrolled the shore, the third team, led by S Rajkumar, Sub Inspector of Police, waited in the sea in a boat and foiled the smuggling attempt.

The accused were identified as P. Malaiyandi (39) from Thoothukudi and S. Kasim Mohamed (32) from Vedhalai.
