Personnel of the Indian Coast Guard Station (ICGS) here, led by Commandant Udhal Singh, observed World Environment Day on Saturday.

In a bid to protect the environment from pollution, 100 tree saplings were planted on the coast guard station premises. Under the theme of biodiversity in 2010, the Coast Guard personnel here would take all measures for a clean and green environment, Mr. Singh said.

A series of mass cleaning programmes along the coast were also being taken up on a large scale to protect the environment. He sought the cooperation of the public to maintain the cleanliness of the beach and urged them not to drop litter “since it is the source of entertainment.”
