Doctors at Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (VMCHRI) successfully performed a “delicate” arthroscopic surgery to rectify the tear in the rotator cuff of a man’s shoulder recently.

Hospital sources said that the patient had met with a two-wheeler accident which resulted in the injury. He had reportedly approached various hospitals, which suggested complex and expensive procedures, before coming to VMCHRI, the sources added.

K.N. Subramanian, Head of Sports Injury and Joint Replacement unit at the VMCHRI, said that an arthroscopic procedure was performed instead of an open surgery to cure the tear. “We could finish the surgery in two hours with the help of high-end equipment. We used the equipment with radiofrequency waves to repair the injury without affecting other tissues,” Dr. Subramanian said.

He added that the arthroscopic procedure was advantageous as the pain, blood loss and hospitalisation required were considerably lesser while the recovery was faster.
