Water supply to several divisions on the eastern side of the Thrikkakara Municipality leading up to Manakkakkadavu was restored on Saturday after Kerala Water Authority repaired a pipe that had burst on the Athani-Navodaya stretch on Thursday.

An official of the water authority said that water supply was restored by afternoon and pumping had been normal since then.

Water authority plans to replace 800 metres of the 300-mm asbestos cement pipe with ductile iron pipe within a month at a cost of approximately Rs. 50 lakh, the official said.

Member of the municipal council 13, Athani, M. J. Dixon said the water authority had been informed about the condition of the pipeline that runs through the area before it burst on Thursday.

The pipeline is the mainstay for water supply to areas like Vallyattumugal, Thengode, Edachira and Kalathikkuzhi, on the eastern side of the municipality, which are now facing acute shortage of water. People now depend almost entirely on public supplies with the traditional water sources drying up in the extreme summer.
