The Chief Minister will lay the foundation stone for Vyttila and Kundanoor flyovers in August and they will be commissioned in 18 months’ time, Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju has said.

He was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Rs. 72.20 crore Palarivattom flyover on Sunday.

Administrative sanction was accorded for land acquisition and construction of a six-lane flyover at Vyttilla, costing a total of Rs. 109 crore. The detailed design will be ready by July. The four-lane Kundanoor flyover would cost Rs 80.20 crore, the Minister said.

In his address, Chief Minister Ommen Chandy promised to accord priority to develop alternative roads and to build more overbridges and flyovers to decongest Kochi. “Kochi is among the fastest-growing cities in Asia. Roads and transportation infrastructure in the city are crucial for economic development and job creation. There were a lot of lapses during the past few decades and we need to urgently catch up on this front,” he said.

Referring to the State government’s ‘Mission 676’ programme, Mr. Chandy said priority schemes had been listed out and timetables fixed for each.

“I will review progress of each scheme every 100 days. Apart from infrastructure, spotlight will be on the health sector,” he said.
