The 65th anniversary of the historic Punnapra-Vayalar uprising saw Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan, a participant in the revolt, and CPI (M) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan coming down heavily on what they termed a continuation of suppression of human rights by right-wing forces, even after so many years.
Inaugurating the anniversary celebrations of the uprising at the Vayalar memorial near Cherthala here on Thursday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the misuse of power by Oommen Chandy was continuing.
Stating that the enquiries into the ice-cream parlour sex scandal and the suicide of two girls on the railway tracks in Kozhikode would only lead to more UDF ministers ending up in jail, the Leader of Opposition said that Mr. Chandy should be reminded of the tradition of K. Karunakaran, who had resigned without delay when he was accused of involvement in the Rajan murder case.

CPI (M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, delivering the keynote address, said that every corruption controversy that erupted in the recent past could be directly linked to the Congress.
Reflections of the same were available in Kerala too, where the Chandy government had seen to it that the law and order situation in the State was sabotaged in every manner possible.
CPI State secretary C.K. Chandrappan, CPI Assistant state secretary K.E. Ismail, CPI (M) district secretary C.B. Chandrababu, and Punnapra-Vayalar veteran P. K. Chandranandan were present.
