Poor power supply situation has thrown drinking water supply in and around the city into disarray with most of the city areas bearing the brunt of the situation. Water supply situation has been particularly serious in the West Kochi areas.
Voltage fluctuation triggered by a peak in power consumption has hit water pumping operations and water supply has been irregular at several places.
Kerala Water Authority sources said that supply operations had been seriously hit at places like Pazhoor, which is the source of water supply to Nettoor and neighbouring areas. Operations have also been affected in Moovattupuzha, Angamaly, Kalady, Palluruthy, Kalamassery, Pizhala and Vaduthala.

Though it was earlier felt that places in West Kochi and Cheranellur faced serious water shortage owing to their locations at the tail-end of the supply line, the problem has been persisting in these areas.
The sources said that the power quality was so poor that pumping operations had to be halted for most part of the day at places like Pazhoor. It implies that only about half the normal supply of water may be available.
Meanwhile, the figures for power consumption in the State indicate further troubles in the near future as the summer demand has resulted in record power consumption across Kerala. According to figures from the KSEB, power consumption touched a record 78.629 million units on Tuesday. This is an all-time high in the State.
