An unruly crowd attacked a police jeep belonging to the Chengamanad police station and broke one of its side windows following an argument near Athani around 2 p.m. on Sunday. The argument began after the police tried to detain a man who was allegedly trying to drive a two-wheeler while drunk.

The Nedumbassery police have registered a case against the person for destruction of public property. No arrests have been made yet.

Nedumbassery police said the row began after the team from Chengamanad police stopped a man who was driving his two-wheeler drunk. “The police said that he was visibly drunk and unstable. He had come to pick up his wife and child from the bus stop near Athani. A police officer tried to prevent him from getting on the vehicle again with his family,” said an officer from the Nedumbassery police. One of the policemen reportedly asked the family to stand aside and drove the two-wheeler to the police station. A group of people standing nearby then allegedly got into an argument with the police driver after the second policeman had left. The people allegedly pulled the driver out of the vehicle and attacked the jeep.
