Underground power lines on Kochi metro route

May 18, 2014 12:33 pm | Updated 12:33 pm IST - KOCHI:

Power transmission lines along the entire metro rail corridor from Aluva to Pettah are set to go underground, while transformers that protrude into footpaths and roads will be relocated.

All overhead lines will be replaced with underground cables that would be laid over side drains.

A final decision on how to go about the task will be taken following a joint inspection by officials of KSEB, metro stakeholders and PWD, said Elias George, managing director of KMRL.

This was decided at a high-level meeting held here on Saturday in which metro stakeholders and KSEB officials participated.

The officials also discussed contingency plans to safely evacuate metro commuters in case of a power shut down.

Sourcing power from solar panels laid over metro stations and coach repair depot for lighting too was discussed. KSEB Chairman M. Shivsankar and DMRC’s Kochi Project Director P. Sriram were among those present.

Land acquisition

On Sunday, KMRL will convene a meeting to decide how to go ahead with framing rules to acquire pending land for the metro, based on the Centre’s new Land Acquisition Act. Many provisions of the new Act are reportedly posing hurdles to smooth acquisition of land for the metro.

The Revenue Secretary and Land Revenue Commissioner are expected to participate in the meeting.
