Two drown in boat capsize in Periyar

A fishing expedition ended in a tragedy when two persons, including a boy, drowned in the Periyar waters near Thuruthi kadavu at Okkal near here on Monday afternoon.

The victims are Anilkumar, 40, and Harikrishnan, 14, both of Okkal. Sreeraj, who was part of the team, escaped unhurt.

The Perumbavoor police said that the country boat that was used for fishing capsized.

A local person said that they were almost in the middle of the river when the craft overturned. “It was all over in a flash and we could see Sreeraj swimming towards the shore. But there was no trace of the other two,” he said.

Anilkumar and Sreeraj were friends of Harikrishnan’s father. The boy was a student of Sree Narayana Higher Secondary School at Okkal.

N.J. Baby, Assistant Station Officer, Department of Fire and Rescue Services at Perumbavoor, said that they received information about the incident around 3.10 p.m. Fire Force personnel used a scuba diving suit to bring out the bodies.

‘No deep pits’

Mr. Baby said that there were no deep pits in the area where the accident occurred.
