Tripunithura gears up for Onam

Athachamayam, the public procession carrying forward the traditional Athaghosham of the erstwhile royal town of Tripunithura, will be held on Friday.

The procession, with a mix of traditional and modern elements, will include Panchavadyam and performances by students of various schools in Tripunithura. Members of the Kudumbasree Mission and student police cadets will also take part in the procession. The procession will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at 9 a.m. at the Boys’ High School at Atham Nagar. Minister for Excise and Fisheries K. Babu will preside. Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar will be the chief guest while Minister for Civil Supplies Anoop Jacob will hoist the Atham flag.

Tripunithura municipality chairman R. Venugopal will receive the Atham flag on Thursday evening from the representative of the royal family from the Hill Palace premises. The flag will be brought to Atham Nagar in a procession.

On Friday, events will be held beginning with a Pookkalam contest and display at Sion auditorium. Cultural programmes in the evening will be led by Bamboo orchestra. The 10-day festival in the town provides a platform to showcase a variety of cultural programmes. A Naval band concert will be held on September 1, magic show and Thiruvathirakali on September 2 and ghazal concert on September 4. On September 6, a procession will be held to hand over the Atham flag to Thrikkakara municipal chairman for Onam celebrations at Onam Nagar there.
