The Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ernakulam, attached to the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, will organise a sales mela for Kadaknath fowls (‘Karimkozhi’) on April 5 at the sales counter attached to the CMFRI near the High Court of Kerala.

The fair is being organised as part of KVK’s campaign to promote ‘self-farming for safe food.’ The KVK’s efforts are aimed at popularising the rearing of the indigenous variety of fowls in homesteads as part of the safe-to-eat eggs and meat campaign. Two-month-old birds would be supplied as a flock of two males and three females in a box, said a KVK statement.

The day-old chicks brought from the Central Poultry Development Organisation (CPDO), Mumbai, were reared for two months under scientific management protocol and with all vaccinations complete. These birds will be available for purchase on Tuesday.

The CPDO is engaged in popularising poultry farming across the country.

Kadaknath fowls are native to Jabhuva district of Madhya Pradesh. The eggs and the dark-in-colour meat from the fowls are believed to have medicinal properties.
