Rajagiri School wins regional final of Young World quiz contest

Grand finale to be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday

In a nail-biting finish that came down to the last question, Arshad Muhammed and George M. Thottan of Rajagiri Public School, Kalamassery, edged past Navaneeth Krishna and Kevin Abraham Cherian of Gregorian Public School by a solitary point in the Kochi regional final of the 12th edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz held at AJ Hall, Kaloor, here on Friday.

Karthik Ganapathy and Vasudev Chakravarti of Bhavan's Adarsha Vidyalaya emerged the second runner-up. Abhilash Panda and Aparna Sanjay of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Girinagar; Suman Mahesh and Aditya P. Patil of Bhavan's Adarsha Vidyalaya; and Aswathi K. Babu and Swathi C.S. of Little Hearts School, North Paravur; came in the next three positions.

The winners and the first and second runners-up walked away with cash awards of Rs. 15,000, Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively. The winners of the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions received cash awards of Rs. 2,000 each. Besides, all the winners bagged gifts of various sponsors of the event and certificates from

The Hindu Young World . The audience also bagged various prizes for coming good when the participating teams found questions too tough to answer.

V.V. Ramanan hosted the contest in his own unique style, winning over the participants and audience alike as in the previous years. The winners of the Kochi regional final will now represent the city alongside winners from 15 other cities at the grand finale to be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

The six finalists of the day were chosen based on the performance in a 25-question written preliminary round contested by over 300 teams from schools in five districts.

Velammal Educational Trust is the title sponsor of the event while Extramarks Education Pvt. Ltd. and Indian Overseas Bank are the associate sponsors. The national sponsors are Black Thunder, Gold Winner, Amway, Vizag Steel Plant, Maggi Noodles, Wilco Picture Library, Firefox Bikes, Reynolds, Funfills, Success Notebooks, Cricket Caricatures.com and Penguin Books. The winners of the grand finale will drive away in Tata Nano cars along with a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. The second prize carries Rs. 40,000 and the third prize Rs. 30,000. The fourth, fifth and sixth places will carry Rs. 10,000 each. A team from Kochi consisting of K. Rishikesh and Aswin Menon of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, were the national winners in the last edition of the quiz competition.
