The trustees of Cochin Port Trust, which met here on Wednesday, have set up a sub-committee to look into high handling charges at the port.
The committee comprises representatives of the community of clearing and forwarding agents, steamer agents, Customs House agents, export organisations, two labour trustees of the port P. A. Mohammed Haneef and C. D. Nandakumar as well as secretary of the Cochin Port Trust Cyril George and Traffic Manager Unnikrishnan.
The panel has been asked to submit the report as soon as possible. High handling charge on fertilizers has forced the Union Fertilizer Ministry not to allocate quota for Kochi, said trade union sources on Friday. The charge at Kochi for handling a tonne of fertilizer is significantly higher than in other ports.
