Judge Kalam Pasha sends the PoE in custody for interrogation.

The Ernakulam CBI Court on Wednesday sent L. Adolphus, the Protector of Emigrants (PoE) and a key accused in the Kochi nurses’ recruitment scam, to CBI custody for two days.

Considering a custody petition by the CBI for his interrogation, Judge Kalam Pasha sent the PoE in custody by noting that his interrogation in CBI custody would be necessary for the progress of the case. He will have to be produced in court on Friday at 1.30 a.m. The court will consider the bail application of Adolfus on the same day.

During the hearing, the CBI counsel submitted that the accused had continued to help the recruitment agencies without licence despite the CBI booking him in similar cases. Further, he never reported the Protector General of Emigrants that these agencies were charging Rs 19.5 lakh from the nurses nor held any inquiry despite the complaints.

The counsel for Adolphus, however, argued that it was following a report filed by the PoE that the union government decided to hand over the recruitment of nurses to government-run agencies. Further, no departmental action has been taken against him as he maintained good service track record.
