The tender for pipe replacement from Perumannur pump to West Kochi areas is in the final stages. Nearly six kilometres of 700 cm-wide ductile iron pipe will replace the old primo pipes that were unable to withstand the normal pressure. The Kerala Water Authority had earlier got administrative sanction of Rs. 11 crore for the project that involves pipe replacement from Perumannur to Thevara and from Thoppumpady bridge to Karuvelipady and beyond that provides the main water pipeline to Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.
The issue of replacement of old pipes came to the fore once again when the water supply mainline to West Kochi burst on Friday at Atlantis junction, throwing road traffic out of gear. Pumping was resumed by Saturday midnight, said Jesse Jose, executive engineer (central region), KWA. By Sunday evening, water supply to far-end customers too would be restored, she said.
On increasing water supply to West Kochi, she said once the supply from the Maradu water treatment plant to the city gets stabilised, the extra water could be utilised to improve the supply. Since the beginning of the month, the Maradu plant has been supplementing the supply from the Thammanam pump house, thereby improving water supply to the city.
