Winning a national award holds the risk of being typecast as a ‘serious’ actor. But Surabhi Lakshmi, who won the national award for the best female actor for her performance in Minnaminungu , wants to get out of the trap at the earliest.
“I will have to sit at home without any work, if I insist on doing only serious roles after bagging the national award,” she told mediapersons at the Ernakulam Press Club on Tuesday.

Stating that her life at the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit helped her fine-tune her acting talents, Surabhi pointed out that campus life opened up the world of theatre before her. “I had the chance to act in various theatre productions,” she said.
Surabhi bagged the first rank as an undergraduate student of the Department of Dance before she joined the Department of Theatre for post-graduation. Her teachers said she had played key roles in various theatre productions. “Surabhi had this excellent talent of getting into the skin of the character,” they said.
